National Diabetes Week 13–19 July 2025

Type 2 diabetes doesn’t have to be for life — and in many cases, it doesn’t have to happen at all.

We’re shifting the way we understand type 2 diabetes. Rather than seeing diagnosis as the start of a disease, we’re recognising it as the final stage of a long, preventable process. And most importantly — it’s a process we can interrupt.

Every year, around 100,000 Australians progress from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes.
But with early access to effective treatments, this outcome is no longer inevitable.

New medications can prevent over 90% of people with pre-diabetes from developing full-blown diabetes.
Surgery in the first 5 years after a type 2 diagnosis can lead to remission in 90% of patients.

With a structured system of care — starting with medications and progressing to surgery when needed — we could reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes by up to 99%.

Know the risk signs.
If you have:

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
  • Kidney disease
  • Adiposity (excess body fat)

…you may be at increased risk and should discuss screening with your GP. The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome.
